Choosing to Parent
Understanding parenting as one of your pregnancy options when facing an unplanned pregnancy.
Choosing to parent is a meaningful and life-changing decision. For some women, parenting is the right path, even when circumstances feel overwhelming or unexpected. This choice requires courage, commitment, and support. Parenting means taking responsibility for your child’s physical, emotional, and financial needs. It can bring joy and purpose, but it also comes with challenges. You do not have to navigate this decision alone.
What Parenting May Involve
- Providing daily care, stability, and nurturing
- Long-term emotional and financial responsibility
- Adjusting personal goals, schedules, and priorities
- Building a support system for yourself and your child
Support Is Available
If you are considering parenting, it’s important to understand what resources may be available to you. Support can include:
- Parenting education and resources
- Referrals for housing, medical care, and community assistance
- Emotional support and counseling
- Help connecting with local programs and services
Questions to Consider
- Can you financially support a baby?
- Do you understand the needs and developmental stages of infancy, childhood, and adolescence?
- Do you have childcare resources when you return to work or school?
- Are you emotionally stable and ready for the stressors that come with parenting?
- Who will be your support system?
- How will the father of the baby be involved? Will he be able to help you with parenting?
- What are your career goals? What are your educational goals?
- Can you provide for your child’s needs?
