Can I Choose Who Adopts My Baby

One of the first questions many women ask when considering adoption is, Can I choose who adopts my baby? The answer is yes. In fact, choosing the adoptive family is one of the most personal and meaningful parts of creating an adoption plan.

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, it’s understandable to wonder how much control you’ll have throughout the process. Many women are surprised to learn that modern adoption is centered around their choices. At Wyoming Children’s Society, we want you to know that your voice matters. This is your decision, and our role is to provide information, answer your questions, and support you every step of the way.

You Have More Choices Than You May Realize

Some people still picture adoption as something that happens to a woman, where everyone else makes the decisions and she simply follows along. That image is outdated and doesn’t reflect how adoption works today.

If you choose to explore adoption, you remain at the center of every important decision. You decide whether adoption is the right path, what type of adoption plan feels comfortable, how involved you would like to be, and which family you believe is the best fit for your child. Our job is never to pressure you. Instead, we’re here to educate, guide, and support you as you make the decisions that are right for you.

How Do I Choose an Adoptive Family?

Every family hoping to adopt has a unique story. They come from different backgrounds, enjoy different lifestyles, and have their own traditions, interests, and dreams for raising a child.

Before any family is presented to an expectant parent, they complete a thorough approval process that includes background checks, interviews, education, and a comprehensive home study. This process helps ensure they are prepared emotionally, financially, and legally to provide a safe and loving home.

Once approved, you’ll have the opportunity to review family profiles that often include photographs, personal letters, and information about their lives. You’ll learn about their careers, hobbies, extended families, parenting philosophies, and the reasons they hope to adopt. As you read through the profiles, you’ll begin to see each family’s personality, values, and vision for the future. Many women tell us that one family simply feels like the right fit.

What Should I Look For?

There isn’t a checklist you have to follow, and there are no right or wrong priorities. Every expectant parent values different things, which is why every adoption plan looks a little different.

You may hope your child grows up with siblings, pets, or grandparents who live nearby. You might value education, faith, cultural traditions, or opportunities to travel. Perhaps you picture a family that enjoys spending time outdoors or one that shares values that are important to you. Whatever matters most, your preferences deserve to be heard and respected.

The goal isn’t to find a perfect family. It’s to find the family that gives you confidence, peace of mind, and hope for your child’s future.

What If I Can’t Decide?

It’s completely normal to have a difficult time choosing. After all, this is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, and you may find yourself connecting with more than one wonderful family.

You don’t have to navigate that decision on your own. We’ll take the time to learn what’s important to you and help narrow your options based on your hopes, values, and priorities. We’ll answer your questions honestly, provide additional information when needed, and give you the time and space to make a decision without feeling rushed.

There is no deadline for choosing simply because someone else thinks you should.

Can I Meet the Adoptive Family?

Yes. If you would like to meet the adoptive family before your baby is born, we can help make that happen.

Many expectant parents appreciate the opportunity to build a relationship before placement. These relationships often provide reassurance, answer lingering questions, and help everyone become more comfortable as they get to know one another.

Other women prefer very little contact before placement, and that’s perfectly okay as well. Every adoption relationship is different, and your adoption plan should reflect the level of communication that feels most comfortable for you.

What If I Want to Stay in Contact?

One of the biggest myths about adoption is that you’ll never know what happens after placement. While that may have been true decades ago, today’s adoptions are often much more open.

Many birth parents choose an open or semi-open adoption that allows continued communication with the adoptive family. Depending on everyone’s preferences, that relationship may include letters, photos, emails, phone calls, video chats, or even occasional visits.

As you create your adoption plan, we’ll talk through the different types of adoption relationships and help you understand what each one can look like. Together, we’ll create a plan that reflects your wishes while supporting the long-term well-being of your child.

What If I Change My Mind About the Family?

Choosing an adoptive family is an important step, but it isn’t something you’re locked into the moment you select a profile. If your feelings change or you have concerns, tell us.

Open communication is one of the most important parts of the adoption process. Our role is to listen, answer your questions, and help you navigate each step with confidence. If something doesn’t feel right, we want to know so we can work through it together.

You should never feel like you’re facing these decisions by yourself.

Why Working With a Licensed Adoption Agency Matters

Searching online can make adoption seem overwhelming. You may find private websites, social media posts, or people advertising that they’re looking to adopt. Working with a licensed adoption agency provides an added layer of guidance, protection, and support throughout your journey.

As one of Wyoming’s licensed adoption agencies, we’ve already completed the careful work of preparing waiting families. Every family has met legal requirements and completed the necessary education before being presented to expectant parents. That means you can focus on getting to know families instead of wondering whether they’ve been properly screened.

This Is Your Decision

Perhaps the most important thing we want you to remember is this. No one knows your heart better than you do. Choosing an adoptive family isn’t about finding perfection because no family is perfect. It’s about finding the people you believe will love, nurture, and support your child throughout their life.

We’ll never tell you which family to choose. Instead, we’ll walk beside you, answer your questions, and help you feel confident in whatever decision you make.
