First Meeting With an Adoption Agency

Your first meeting with an adoption agency may feel intimidating, especially when you do not know what to expect. At Wyoming Children’s Society, we want that first conversation to feel comfortable and useful. You do not need to arrive knowing that you want to choose adoption. There is also no need to prepare answers to every question about your pregnancy or future. Our first meeting is an opportunity to get to know you, understand your situation, and answer the questions that matter to you.

Your First Meeting Starts With a Conversation

When you first meet with us, we want to learn about you and what brought you to WCS. Every woman reaches out for different reasons, so there is no standard story we expect to hear.

Maybe you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and wondering whether you can parent. Perhaps you have already spent time researching adoption and feel ready to learn more. You may also be somewhere in between and just curious.

Our conversation can begin wherever you are. We may ask about your pregnancy, current circumstances, support system, and what you have considered so far. These questions help us understand how we can best support you. You can ask questions throughout the meeting.

We Will Explain How Adoption Works

Adoption can seem complicated when you first begin researching it. Different websites and adoption agencies use unfamiliar words that make the process harder to understand, while outdated stereotypes, misinformation, and the taboo that still surrounds adoption can add even more confusion.

During your meeting, we can explain the adoption process in clear, everyday language. We will discuss the decisions you can make and what happens if you decide to continue exploring adoption.

Questions may include how adoptive families are selected, what role the baby’s father may have, whether financial assistance is available, how hospital planning works, or what future contact could look like. We can begin answering those questions while explaining which details depend on individual circumstances.

We Will Talk About What You Want for Your Baby

If you are interested in continuing, we can begin discussing what matters to you in an adoptive family. Some women already have very specific preferences. Others have never thought about what they would look for in a family.

You might care about whether a family has other children, where they live, or their lifestyle. Religion, education, extended family, and opportunities for your child could also matter to you. There is no checklist of preferences you are supposed to have. Our job is to help you think about what feels important.

You can also learn how prospective adoptive families are screened. Understanding those safeguards can make reviewing families feel less overwhelming when you reach that stage.

You May Begin Talking About an Adoption Plan

Your first meeting can also introduce the idea of an adoption plan. An adoption plan reflects your preferences for the adoption and helps us understand how you want the experience handled. It can eventually include your choice of family, hospital preferences, and plans for contact after placement. However, you do not need to complete one during that conversation.

Some of those decisions may take time. You might leave your first meeting wanting to think about what you learned before discussing anything further. Another woman may feel ready to begin reviewing families immediately. Both responses are okay. We can move forward at a pace that gives you time to understand your choices.

You Do Not Have to Commit to Adoption

One of the most important things to understand before a first meeting is that talking with us does not mean committing to adoption. It is possible to learn about adoption without deciding to place a baby for adoption. Asking questions creates no obligation to continue, and meeting with our team does not mean signing away any parental rights.

Some women worry that contacting an adoption agency starts a process they cannot stop. That fear can prevent someone from getting information that could actually help with making a decision.

Uncertainty is completely welcome. Share what is worrying you, what options you are considering, and what still feels unclear. Our role is to provide information and support while you decide what is right for your situation.

What Should I Bring to My First Meeting?

You do not need to arrive with a folder of documents or extensive information. If there is something specific we need later, we can explain what to provide and why we need it.

It may help to bring a list of questions, especially if you have been researching adoption on your own. Pregnancy can already feel overwhelming, and it is easy to forget something you wanted to ask. You can also tell us about any immediate concerns affecting your pregnancy. Housing, finances, transportation, medical care, safety, or lack of support may be important parts of your situation.

Knowing about those concerns helps us better understand what you are experiencing. We can then discuss available support and other resources that may be appropriate.

What Happens After the Meeting?

What happens next depends largely on what you want to do. You may decide that you want more information before taking another step. Alternatively, you might feel ready to begin creating your plan. If you continue exploring adoption, we can guide you through each stage rather than giving you everything at once. You may begin considering families, discussing contact preferences, or preparing for your hospital experience.

Our relationship with you does not end after one conversation. Questions can change throughout pregnancy, and circumstances can change too. We remain available as you work through your decisions.
