Travel Requirements
Two trips to Russia are required during the adoption process. The first trip is three to four days in-country. On the first trip you will have the opportunity to meet and visit with your child. You will also be able to meet with the orphanage director and staff to learn more about your child. You will receive a current medical report. It may be possible to request an independent medical examination if you desire.
The second trip is approximately 20 days in length in-country, not including travel. Once again you will visit with your child at least twice prior to the court hearing. At the court hearing your adoption will be finalized, followed by a 10-day waiting period before the court will officially recognize the adoption.
The judge rarely waives the 10-day waiting period unless the judge feels that the child has a serious medical condition to warrant immediate medical attention in the United States.
After the 10-day waiting period is completed you will receive your child or children’s new birth certificate, adoption certificate and court decree. You will also apply for your child’s international passport.
Then you will travel to Moscow to apply for your child’s visa and register the child in the Russian Consulate. You will spend approximately three days in Moscow before returning home with your child.
Families will usually spend 3-4 days in Moscow. Families will be assisted by our Moscow staff in applying for their child or children’s immigrant visa, completing their child or children’s medical and completing consulate registration.
