Children Who Wait

For Wyoming Residents Only
There are many wonderful children waiting for adoption who have a variety of special needs. Just as the children have special needs, the parents considering adopting have needs for specialized information and, sometimes, they need special financial assistance, too.

Waiting children are currently in foster or residential care and most have been removed from their families of origin due to abuse or chronic neglect.

Waiting Children Adoption Program

The Wyoming Children’s Society is committed to finding loving, permanent homes for waiting children in the public foster care system.  These children are defined as having special needs that may include behavioral, emotional, educational, and/or medical challenges, or children who are members of a sibling group that needs to be placed together.  The Society’s professional staff actively recruit, assess, prepare and support adoptive homes for the particular challenges of parenting children who have been victims of abuse and neglect.

Wendy’s Wonderful Kids is a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.  The Wendy’s program provides non-competitive, invitation-only grants to private licensed adoption agencies with experienced adoption recruiters to assist public child welfare agencies in moving children from foster care into permanent, loving adoptive homes. The Wyoming Children's Society is the sole designated Wyoming agency for Wendy's Wonderful Kids, and since July 2006 the Society has been working closely with the Wyoming Department of Family Services and its various field offices to recruit adoptive homes for Wyoming foster children.

Getting Prepared
Training is available to adoptive parents. It focuses on such subjects as abuse and neglect, grief and loss, attachment, discipline and self esteem. Adoptive parents of waiting children are required to attend special needs training because these children and their families face special challenges.

Financial Assistance
Adoption subsidies to adoptive families are available for most waiting children.
